Max Brenner Chocolate Bar

7263 Woodmont Ave, Bethesda, MD

[next to Jaleo, – Two blocks south and one block west of the Bethesda Metro stop]

September 27, 2013 – 4.30pm, 6 adults – not reservations needed or accepted (except for birthday parties), this is more of a cafe than restaurant

This new location just outside of DC – just opened their doors on July 31, 2013.

A group of co-workers did happy hour here, sharing the items below… because a sugar coma would be forthcoming if anyone ate all this alone… There were plenty of sauce in the fondue – enough for us to purchase another bowl of strawberries, bananas and cookie pieces ($4.95) to mop it all up – almost. Several people did engage spoons to get every last drop.

Both the fondue and waffle were thoroughly enjoyed by all. For those who like milk shakes, the one we sampled was very good. The Melting Chocolate Heart Cake and Shake was the least impressive of the group although it came with a silver flask of warm liquid chocolate that was sinfully good.

Although the chocolate, fruit and baked goods were of superior quality, certain aspects of the outing left us rather underwhelmed. Water was served in little plastic cups. Also, for a place serving things meant for sharing, individual plates were not offered, no idea if they are even available. Also, napkins seemed to be an afterthought. There were six of us, only 4 settings of silverware (the only way to get napkins) were delivered to the table. These minor oversights detracted from the quality of the food and kept the night from being a complete success.

Since there were a couple of people unable to make this outing, we will be going back. Looking forward to the next trip. Would love to see them get a liquor license – booze up the milkshakes and hot chocolate and offer something sparkling (prosecco or cava) as a complement.

Classic European Fondue – two towers of melted chocolate in your choice of milk, dark or white. Served with sticky toffee sauce, strawberries, bananas, fluffy cocoa cake, marshmallows and your own grill

Tutti Frutti Pearl Sugar Waffle with mixed berries, citrus sugar, milk chocolate and vanilla ice cream

Melting Chocolate Heart Cake and Shake – dark fudge cake with a heart of melting white chocolate. With vanilla ice cream, berries and an iced chocolate shot

80’s Milkshake – milk chocolate ganache, vanilla ice cream, and nostalgic crunchy chocolate shell

Total Cost: $70 including tax and tip
